Palmyra Pirate Weekend, August 12-13

Palmyra, NY – July 18, 2016
Historic Palmyra’s Pirates of the Erie Canal invade the Village of Palmyra, New York during the ninth annual Palmyra Pirate Weekend, August 12-13, bearing a boatload of family-friendly fun for all ages.  Bed racing, 5K race, Pirate Kazoo Band Parade, children’s treasure hunt, canal trail tours, Historic Palmyra pirate tales and museum tours are just a few of the exciting events featured in this year’s celebration of Palmyra’s canal connection.

The Pillage ‘N the Village Bed Race Regatta returns, streaking straight through the heart of the historic Main Street business district.  Five-person pirate crews will compete head-to-head against other speedy scallywags and scoundrels for a cash prize and other awards. Pirates of all rank–the ranker, the better--are welcome to enlist, with local service, community organizations, and businesses expected to round out the racing field. Race applications, information, and complete racing bed specifications are available online now at www.eriecanalpirates.com.

New for 2016! The pirates have built a fleet of racing beds ready to roll - all you need to do is bring a five-person team, ready to run.

The Erie Canal delivered people to important places for important reasons, like Susan Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott to Seneca Falls for history’s first women’s convention; to Rochester to meet and support Frederick Douglass and Harriett Tubman or to witness the Fox Sisters summon spirits and their eerie knockings. Or maybe people on the temperance bandwagon hurrying to the Burned Over District so Charles Finney could save their souls. It was a time of intense individual focus and enlightened change in the ways in which people communicated. It was as if a bolt of electricity struck western New York, lighting it up as fertile ground for ideas and lifestyles that had never been expressed or attempted before. It was a time of religious re-birth, ongoing social reform and making one’s life the best it could be in the present, in the future . . . and even the great beyond.
