Igor & Red Elvises
Live in the Palmyra Village Park

Memorial Day - Monday, May 30 at 3pm
East Main St. Palmyra

Palmyra, NY – April 25, 2016  Bring your Memorial Day picnic to the Palmyra Village Park and join the Rokenrol Revolution with a special performance by Igor & Red Elvises.  Playing a unique blend of Russian folk music, 50’s rockabilly/surf, reggae, and whatever else makes them happy, Igor & Red Elvises’ nearly perpetual world tour provides a constant delight to legions of passionate fans around the globe.

This all-ages, outdoor show is presented by the Village of Palmyra Celebrations Committee and Historic Palmyra’s Pirates of the Erie Canal, concluding a day of public events beginning with the Palmyra Memorial Day Parade on Main Street at 9am, followed by a remembrance ceremony in the Village Cemetery on Jackson Street. The music begins in the Palmyra Village Park on East Main Street at 3pm, but you’re welcome to arrive earlier to stake out your place on the lawn.

If you’d rather let somebody else do the cooking, picnic food and ice cream will be available for purchase before and during the show from Wayne County 4H Teen Exchange and Pal-Mac Lions’ Club.

Event organizers are delighted to present this show free of charge, but concert-goers are asked to consider making a small donation of a non-perishable food item to the Palmyra Food Pantry. Collection boxes and volunteers will be present to accept contributions.

Igor & Red Elvises first played Palmyra, in October 2010 and are always eager to return to play for their favorite pirates and guests ever since. The show will be the only Rochester-area performance on the current leg of their world tour that will culminate with performances in Israel, Germany, and Russia in July.

And just where did this road trip begin? In 1995, band leader and Russian émigré Igor Yuzov dreamed that Elvis Presley came to him and told him to start playing rock ‘n roll. Not one to say “no” to a king, Igor and other Russian friends started playing music on the streets of Santa Monica, California and The Red Elvises were born.

Pyrate MacDeath (aka Bill Unterborn), co-founder of Historic Palmyra’s Pirates of the Erie Canal, and longtime Red Elvises fan, says he and his fellow pirates can never resist bringing the band back to town.

Igor & Red Elvises put on a terrific show with great music, great spirit, and plenty of great dance tunes,” said Unterborn. “I have never seen a band win over new fans so quickly and so completely. See them once, and you’ll be hooked, too.”

The Erie Canal delivered people to important places for important reasons, like Susan Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott to Seneca Falls for history’s first women’s convention; to Rochester to meet and support Frederick Douglass and Harriett Tubman or to witness the Fox Sisters summon spirits and their eerie knockings. Or maybe people on the temperance bandwagon hurrying to the Burned Over District so Charles Finney could save their souls. It was a time of intense individual focus and enlightened change in the ways in which people communicated. It was as if a bolt of electricity struck western New York, lighting it up as fertile ground for ideas and lifestyles that had never been expressed or attempted before. It was a time of religious re-birth, ongoing social reform and making one’s life the best it could be in the present, in the future . . . and even the great beyond.
