1879 Palmyra Town Meeting
Minutes
At the Annual Town Meeting held in the Village Hall in the Village of Palmyra in and for the town of Palmyra on Tuesday March 4th 1879.
Present Presiding:
Wm. H. Southwick, Henry J. Foster, Mark C. Finley, Ornon Archer---Justices

At 8 o’clock A.M. the Polls of the election were declared open and the electors proceeded to vote. At 1:30 P.M. the report of the Supervisor, the Commissioners of Highway and Excise Commissioners were read and adopted. The recommendation of the auditors to raise
$2000.00 for the support of the Poor for the ensuing year after much debate was amended and the meeting Resolved; that the sum of Twenty five hundred dollars $2500.00 be raised by tax for the support of the Poor for the ensuing year and it was further Resolved, that all monies pertaining to the support of the poor of this town pass under the jurisdiction of the Poor Masters subject to the approval and direction of town Auditors and Resolved; that whereas; it is the right and privilege of the taxpayers to know what disposition is made of their funds and whereas the public newspaper press is the recognized agency for diffusing such information therefore
Resolved that the Poor Master of our town be hereby required to publish in our Village Papers a monthly statement of the names of those assisted with the amount furnished to each,
Resolved that the Auditing Board be hereby directed to allow a reasonable compensation for such publication.
We the undersigned presiding officers of town meeting held Tuesday March 4, 1879 do hereby certify that the following persons were duly elected to the offices set opposite their reslpective names, they having received the highest number of votes for said office

We do hereby appoint E. W. Cummings in Election District No. 1 and Charles K. Stearns in Election District No. 2 in said town Inspectors of Election in said districts, respectively to be associated with the two in each of said districts who have this day been elected Inspectors of Election. The said E. W. Cummings and Charles N. Stearns each being one of the persons who received the highest number of votes for said office next to those elected.
On motion the board adjourned sine die

At a meeting of the Justices of the Peace of said town of Palmyra, held at the office of
M. C. Finley Esq. In said town on the 16th day of October 1879 for the purpose of filling a vacancy in the office of Town Clerk of Palmyra aforesaid-F. Wayland Foster having resigned said office-George B. Lawrence of said Town was duly appointed Town Clerk of said town of Palmyra for the remainder of the term of service for which said Foster was elected
