1831 Minutes

 

1831 Minutes:  AT the annual town meeting of the inhabitants of the Town of Palmyra held at Ambrose Salisbury's dwelling house in said town on Tuesday, April 5th, 1831, present:  Frederick Smith and Ambrose Salisbury, Esquires, Justices of the Peace of said town and Inspectors of said election.

 

Voted that we choose three assessors.

 

Voted that we choose four constables.

 

Voted that the Justices of the Peace be elected on the same ballot with the other officers.

 

Voted that the town sealer be elected by ballot and upon the same ticket with the other officers.

 

Voted that the Commissioners and Inspectors of Common Schools be allow $1 per day for their services.

 

Voted that the Collector have 5% for collecting.

 

The following persons having received the greatest number of votes are declared duly elected to the several and respective offices:  Ambrose Salisbury – Supervisor

              Theron R. Strong – Town Clerk

 Lyman Reeves, William Rogers, Jr., & Wells Anderson–Assessors

Ambrose Salisbury & Marlin W. Willcox – Justices of the Peace

George Culver, Sidney S. Durfee, & Draper Allen – Commissioners                of Highways

James Hubbell, Maltby Clark, and Hiram Niles – Commissioners of     Schools

Jonathan L. Eggleston, Joseph M. Grow, and Theron R. Strong –         Inspectors of Schools

Caleb Beal and Eldridge Havens – Overseers of the Poor

Truman Heminway – Collector                                                  Truman Heminway, Francis Bartles, Erasmus D. Robinson, and  Lyman H. Tiffany – Constables

Ira White – Town Sealer

 

Voted that the following persons serve as Observers of Highways in the several road districts for which they are severally chosen:

Voted that the meeting stand adjourned until the first Tuesday of April next, then to be opened at the Presbyterian Meeting House in the Village of Palmyra at 10:00 a.m.

Broke into the enclosure of the subscriber about the middle of May, 1831, a two-year-old black steer with a little white on one of his hind legs.                        Caleb Beal

 

I certify the above to be a true copy of an original paper on file and recorded November 30th, 1831.            T. R. Strong, Town Clerk

 

Broke into the enclosure of the subscriber about June 1st last and continued in and about the same until about October 1st last and is now in the same and has been so from about said October 1st, a red yearling steer with a white spot in his face and some white under his jaws about also on his brisket.  Palmyra, December 3rd, 1831.                  Stephen Durfee of Palmyra, Wayne County.

Broke into the enclosure of the subscriber on or about November 28th last, a cow, seven or eight years old with red color on the sides and white on the back, brindle face, and having one cropped horn and a split in the left ear.  Palmyra, December 3rd, 1831.

Came into the enclosure of the subscriber on the 5th instant a dark chestnut colored horse about fourteen or fifteen years old, lame in his off hind leg.  Palmyra, December 8th, 1831.
