Minutes – Town of Palmyra – 1825

 

Recorded  March 22, 1825.  We, the commissioners of Highways for the Town of Palmyra, do hereby divide Road district No. 11 in said town as follows:  said division or road district divided upon the east line of Pardon Durfee’s farm where he now resides, and the east part of said Road district No. 11 to be known and called Road district No. 24.  Palmyra, March 22nd, 1825.

Recorded March 22, 1825.  We, the Commissioners for the Town of Palmyra, do hereby divide Road District No.15 in said town as follows: The division to be made upon a line drawn east and west even with the south side of Samuel Carr’s barn, south part of said Road District No. 15 to be called and known by Road District No. 15, and the north part of Road District No.15 to be known and called by Road District No. 23.  Palmyra, March 22nd, 1825.

Recorded March 22, 1825.  We, the Commissioners of Highways for the Town of Palmyra, do assign Ambrose Hall to Road District No. 13, then to be assessed and taxed on the highway.  March 22, 1825.

We, the Commissioners of Highways for the Town of Palmyra, do certify that we have this day confirmed and established the road commencing in the center of the road between Thomas Rogers’ 1st Distillery and Jacob D. Rogers’ dwelling house, thence east 37 degrees, south 26 rods, thence east 11 degrees, south 152 rods to the center of the highway running from Thomas Rogers to W. Gibbs, thence on the line of said highway 176 rods, thence east 37 degrees, south 18 rods to the south line of Palmyra, thence east on the town line 68 rods as surveyed by us on December 13, 1823.  Dated March 29th, 1825.

April 4, 1825.  Aaron Moon’s sheep mark:  A half penny the under side of each ear.

 

At the annual town meeting held in the meeting house in the Village of Palmyra on Tuesday, April 5th, 1825, present:  James White, Alexander R. Tiffany, and Frederick Smith, Justices of the Peace of said town and Inspectors of said meeting.

 

Voted:  Frederick Smith serve as Supervisor for the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Alexander R. Tiffany serve as Town clerk the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Nathaniel A. Beckwith, Stephen Thurman, and William

Wilcox serve as Assessors the year ensuing.

 

At the request of Nathaniel H. Beckwith, it was voted that he be excused.  Carried.

 

Voted:  Alex Hendee serve as Assessor for the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Henry Jessup, Luman Harrison, and George Culver serve as Commissioners of Highways the year ensuing.

 

At the request of Luman Harrison, it was voted that he be excused.  Carried.

 

Voted:  Truman Heminway serve as a Commissioner of Highway the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Oliver Clark and Enoch Lilly serve as Overseers of the Poor the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  James White, Joseph Colt, and Solomon St. John serve as Commissioners of Common Schools for the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Edward J. Townsend, Maltby Clark, Cullin Foster serve as Inspectors of Common Schools.

 

Voted:  Collector receive 5% for the collection of taxes the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Collector pay to the Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Palmyra 2% of the money, which he received for the collection of taxes during the time for which he shall be elected.

Voted:  Truman Heminway serve as Collector the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  There be chosen four Constables for the Town of Palmyra the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  Daniel Hendee, Truman Heninway, Cullin Foster, and William R. Corwin serve as Constables for the year ensuing.

 

Voted:  The following resolution—Resolved that the sum of $90 be collected  of the inhabitants of the Town of Palmyra for the purpose of prosecuting and defending the common rights of said town, and the sum of money when collected be paid into the hands of Henry Jessup, Thomas Rogers, 2nd, and Ambrose Hall,  a committee appointed to receive the same.  Disposed of  by a majority of those present.

 

Voted that the Supervisor of said town pay to James H. Johnson the amount of a tax which was levied upon the lands of the said James H. Johnson lying in the Town of Manchester, County of Ontario.  Said tax was collected of the said James H. Johnson and paid over by the Collector of Palmyra.  Thomas B. Baldwin for the County.

 

Voted that the judgment reserved in the name of the Overseers of the Poor of Palmyra against William H. Cuyler, Jr. be discharge and he be exonerated from the payment thereof.

 

Voted that the sum of $100 be levied and that sum be applied toward the erection of bridges across Mud Creek near Barnhart’s Mill on the Montezuma Turnpike whenever the Montezuma Turnpike Company shall have executed a bond on the condition that no gate shall be erected in this town on said turnpike.

 

Voted that the following persons  serve as Overseers of Highways for the said districts for which they are elected:

Voted that the several persons elected Overseers of Highways serve as Fence Views the year ensuing.

 

Voted that the several by-laws passed at the last annual town meeting held in and for said Town of Palmyra be and remain the by-laws for the year ensuing, except so far as it relates to geese, which shall be as follows:  Every person suffering his/her geese to run at large shall forfeit and pay the sum of $.25 for every good to be collect as the law directs.

 

Voted that this meeting adjourn to meet again on the first Tuesday of April next at 10:00  a.m. at the meeting house near G. L. Thurman.

 

Margin Notation:  Received April 13, 1825; recorded April 22nd, 1825.  Palmyra, December 29, 1823.  The survey of a private road for John Esterly beginning at said Esterly dwelling house, thence south 3 degrees, east 68 roads, thence south 28 rods, thence south 20 degrees, west 18 rods, thence 3 degrees east 42 rods, thence south 6 degrees, west 38 rods, thence south 16 degrees, west 20 rods, thence south 1 degree, east 40 rods to the center of a public highway running from Paul Culver's to a highway leading by Stephen Hopkins.

May 7, 1825.  James Green's sheep mark:  A hole in the right ear and a crop in the end of the left.

 

December 19, 1825.  A stray broke into the concourse of Elias Reeves on or before November 20 last.  Said stray is a red heifer, two years old, marked as follows with a white belly and some white stripes of white on the rump and around the hind parts and some small stripes on the outside of the shoulder with white in the left ear.  After viewing this within 21 days, it was requested to call at the described Reeves' property and have her taken away by December 19th, 1825.                 Elias Reeves
