1820 Minutes for Palmyra, New York

 

We, the undersigned, do hereby determine and declare that that part of Road District No. 18 and 20 included in the following bounds:  beginning at the southwest corner of Lot No. 21 in township No. 12 in the 3rd Range, thence north to Mud Creek, thence down the center of Mud Creek to the east boundary of District No. 18, thence south on the east boundary of District No.18 to the southeast corner of Lot No. 23, thence west on the south line Lot No. 23, 22, and 21 to the place of beginning is set off from District No.18 and 20 and shall in the future be known by the name of Road District No. 35, and further that the south half of a certain bridge across Mud Creek on lands owned by David Warner shall be kept in repair by Road District No. 35 and the residue by District No. 20.

We, the undersigned, do determine and declare that Lot No. 98 in Township No. 12, 2nd Range shall be set off from School District No. 7 and attached to School District No. 8 and that Lots No. 60 and 61 in Township No. 12, 2nd Range shall be set off from District No. 3 and attached to District No. 2, and further that Lot No. 68 in Township No. 12, 2nd Range shall be set off from School District No. 5 and attached to School District No. 3 in the Town of Palmyra.

Peter Aldrich’s mark is a crop off the right ear and a halfpenny under each ear.  Recorded on June 10th, 1820.

 

Robert Faulkner’s mark is a crop off the right ear and a slit in the upper side of the same and a slit in the underside of the left.  (Transferred from Stephen Durfee’s mark on page 199 and recorded February 20th, 1821.)

 

At the annual Town Meeting held in the meeting house in the Village of Palmyra on Tuesday, April 4th, 1820, present  Ira Selby, Abraham Spear, Frederick Smith, and Asher Doolittle – Justices of the Peace, Inspectors of said meeting.

 

The meeting being opened by the Town Clerk.

 

Voted that David White serve as Supervisor the year ensuing.

 

Voted that James White serve as Town Clerk the year ensuing.

 

Voted that Abraham Spear, Nathaniel H. Beckwith, and Stephen Shearman serve as Assessors the year ensuing.

 

Voted that Luman Harrison, Zacheus Aldrich, and Isaac Durfee serve as Commissioners of Highways the year ensuing.

 

Voted that James White, Frederick Smith, and Asa B. Smith serve as Commissioners of Schools the year ensuing.

 

Voted that Baruch Beckwith, Thomas Lakey, and John Lapham serve as Inspectors of Schools the year ensuing.

 

Voted that Henry Jessup and George Crane serve as Overseers of the Poor the year ensuing.

 

Voted that Calvin Bradish serve as Collector the year ensuing.

 

Voted that Andrew G. Low, Stephen Reeves, Daniel Hendee, Thomas Lakey, Ashley Vanduzen, and Philander Packard serve as Constables the year ensuing.

 

Voted that in District No. 3, the following persons serve as Overseers of Highways and Fence Viewers.

Voted the law respecting horses be amended by adding the same penalty for each and every offense as voted in the year 1817 and on page 201.

 

Voted the law respecting wolves be the same and is hereby repeated.

 

Voted that the Overseers of the Poor and Justices of the Peace of this town be authorized to act their judgment respecting expediency and propriety of erecting or hiring a house and land for the use of the poor of said town and that the sum of $300 be raised for the purpose above stated or otherwise to be applied for the benefit of said poor at their discretion.

 

Voted that James white serve as Sealer of Weights and Measures the year ensuing.

 

Voted that William Jackways serve as Pound Master the year ensuing.

 

Voted that this meeting be adjourned to be opened at this place on the first Tuesday in April next at 10:00 a.m.

We, the subscribers, Commissioners of Common Schools for the Town of Palmyra, having examined the situation of School District No. 18 in said town do believe it advisable and necessary that the said District No. 18 be attached to District No. 17 in the Town of Palmyra and we do direct the same to be entered in a manner of record aforesaid.

Minutes of the survey of a public highway beginning on the south line of Township No. 12, 2nd Range of township in the Town of Palmyra, 3 rods, 114 links southeast of Joseph Smith's dwelling house, thence north 3 degrees, west 192 rods, thence north 2 degrees, east 24 rods, thence north 3 degrees, west 76 rods, thence north 2 degrees, 58 rods, thence north 7 degrees, east 26 rods, thence north 11 degrees, east 47 rods to the line of lots owned by Zebulun Williams and the house of John Hurlbut, thence north 1 ½ degrees, east on said line 68 rods, thence north 4 degrees, west 42 rods to the south line of Main Street, 2 rods west of the northwest coerner of a lot of land formerly owned by Joseph D. Hayward.  The above minutes area calculated to be the center of the road and were taken by the poor old town compass, actually explored and surveyed by us this 13th day of June, 1820.

Minutes of a public highway beginning at the southeast corner of Levi Shumway's farmhouse, thence east 2 degrees, south 140 rods, thence east 18 degrees, south 20 rods, thence east 26 degrees, south 60 rods, thence east 24 degrees, south 28 rods, thence east 114 degrees, south 106 rods to intersect a highway running easterly on Lot No. 40 explored and actually surveyed by us on the 10th day of april, 1820.  The minutes were taken by the old town compass.

Minutes of a highway beginning at a beech sapling 10 rods south of the northeast corner of Savil(?) Aldrich's land, thence south on the east line of said Aldrich's land to the northeast coerner of Lot No. 38, thence south on the east line of said lot to intersect a highway running east and west at or near the center of said lot.  The above minutes were taken by the old town compass.

Minutes of an alteration of a public highway beginning at the center of the highway running east and west from Abner Hill's 3 rods and 17 links west of the school house, thence noerth 20 degrees, east 20006 rods to the center of the highway near the north line of Halsey Scovell's farm.  Explored and actually surveyed by us on this 17th day of August, 1820.

Minutes of the continuation of an alteration of a public highway beginning 172 rods from the northwest corner of the Town of Palmyra at the end of the several courses and distrances of a public highway surveyed by Isaac Durfee and Asa Aldrich in 1817 from within 14 rods of the above named corner , thence south 40 degrees, east 46 rods to the center of the public highway as now travelled.  Surveyed by us March 12th, 1821.  The minutes of this survey were taken from the old town compass.

We do hereby discontunue the highway leading from the west line of Lot No. 38 in Township No. 12, 3rd Range near the house of Josiah Alvord easterly through the said Lot No. 38 and 39 to the east line of said lot No. 39.  Said discontinuance to take effect after six months from this date.  Dated at Palmyra this 27th day of March, 1821.

Road District No. 36:  We, the undersigned, do hereby determine and declare that that part of Road District No. 29 and No. 6 included in the following bounds beginning on the line 30 rods west of the southeast coern of Lot No. 85, thence parallel with the west line of the Long Island tract to the north line of the Town of Palmyra, thence on said line east to the northeast corner of Lot No. 117, thence south on the east line of Lots No. 117, 139, 84, and so far on 83 as to be parallel with south line of Lot No. 85, thence west to the place of beginning is set off from Districts No. 29 and 6, and shall be in the future known by the name of Road District No. 36.

 

Road District No. 37 and also that part of Road district No. 30 included in the following bounds beginning at the forks of the road westerly from Benjamin Hopkins' dwelling house, thence northwwesterly unto the southwest coerner of Lot No. 136, thence on the west line of Lots No. 136 and 123, thence following the north and west lines of said District No. 30 so far south as to be directly west of the place of beginning, thence east to the place of beginning is set off from Road District No. 30 and shall in the future be known by the name of Road District No. 37.  Dated at Palmyra, March 20th, 1821.
