Records of the District of Tollond, 1796, Liber A

 

At an annual Town Meeting holden at the home of Gideon Durfee within and for the District of Tollond on the first Tuesday of April, 1796.  John Swift, Esq., Inspector of the meeting.  Chosen John Swift, Esquire, Supervisor.

 

Jonathan Edwards, town clerk.  Voted to choose the remaining town officers by nomination.

 

Voted to choose three Assessors:  Jonathan Warner

                                                              Foster Goldsmith

                                                              Humphrey Sherman

 

Voted to choose one Collector:  William Porter

 

            Noah Porter – Overseer of the Poor

            Thomas Goldsmith – Overseer of the Poor

           

            Jared Comstock – Commissioner of the Highways

            Reuben Toron – Commissioner of the Highways

            William Rodgers – Commission of the Highways

 

Voted to choose two Constables:  Joseph Branddish

Voted that the inhabitants of this district shall confine their swine this year from the first day of May to the 20th day of October.

 

Voted that a fence shall not be deemed legal unless it is five feet high, for the first three feet the nails or toggles to be no more than four inches from each other and the nails or toggles for the remaining two feet may be nine inches from each other.

 

Voted that rams shall not run at large after the first day of September until after the twentieth day of November.

 

Voted that the pound keeper be and he hereby is directed to erect a pound on the public lands near the Daniel Sawyer’s old house and to present his amount to be inspected by the Supervisor, and then paid out of the town money.

 

Voted to raise the sum of forty pounds.

 

Voted that this district will give the sum of five dollars for every wolf that shall be taken and killed within the limits of this district within one year from this date.

 

Voted that this meeting stand adjourned until the first Tuesday in April next, then to meet at the house of John Swift, Esquire.

 

I, John Swift to solemnly and sincerely promise and swear that I will in all things to the best of my knowledge and ability impartially execute and perform the trust reposed in me as Supervisor of the Town of Tollond in the County of Ontario and that I will not pay any amount or any article thereof wherewith I shall think the County is not chargeable, nor will I disallow any amount or article thereof, wherewith I shall think it is justly chargeable.

June 6, 1796

 

 

A division of the Highways in the district of Tollond in the County of Ontario are as follows into separate Road District (Viz.). The Road District to begin at the middle of North Creek upon the highway from John Russel’s to Nathan Harris’ to extend north and east over Mud Creek by Thadeus Taft’s and thence eastward by Jonathan Millet’s to the line between the two west twelves, first and second ranges.

 

  1. Road district to begin at the west line of West 12, second Range, between Reuben Town’s and William Jakeway’s to extend east to the line of the lots between John Swift, Esq. and William Jonah Nowell and also south upon the Canandaigua Road to the south line of south district and north by John Russel’s to the middle of Mud Creek.

 

  1. Road district to begin at the west line of William Jonah Nowell’s lot or teniment where he now resides and to extend thence east upon the south side of Mud Crreek to the center lline of the southwest 12 in the 2nd Range including a new highway east of the center line by Thomas Rogers’ and southeast by William Rogers’ on the highway laid towards Flint Creek to the south line of the town or district.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the new street a small distance east of the sawmill belonging to John Swift, Esq. And thence north and east to Mud Creek and over thence east to the center line of the township and also north to the north line of the southwest 12, the 2nd range.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the before mentioned center line between William Willcox and Lieutenant Joel Foster’s to extend east to the line of the lots between David W. Foster and Elias Reeves on the north side of Mud Creek, and also to the south side of Mud Creek from a certain new highway a little east of the center line by James Galloway’s, east to a highway from or between the aforementioned David H. Foster’s to Humphrey Sherman’s and also north and south within the before described lines to the north and south lines of the above said West 12 and the 2nd range.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the before described lines between David H. Foster’s and Elias Reeves to extend north and south and also east to the lines of the line of the aforementioned west 12 in the 2nd range.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the east line of west 12 the 3rd range on the Creek Road and the foot of the hill near William Jakeway’s, thence northward and west the road to Webb Harwood’s west line and also from that to the south line of west 12, 3rd range.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the west line of Webb Harwood’s land, thence west by Jacob Gannet’s to the east end of a certain causeway near the west line of Ebenezer Reed’s land, also south by Gannet’s house over Mud Creek by Abraham Lapham’s to the south line of the district, also east on the south side of Mud Creek to Noah Porter’s.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the east end of the aforementioned causeway near Ebenezer Reed’s west line, thence west on the west line of the west 12 in the 3rd range and also the highway by Jeremiah Smith’s to the south line of the said district.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the Creek Highway a little west of a certain causeway before described near Reed’s land and to extend west by John Gibson’s to the west line of said district.

 

  1. The road district to begin at the Creek Road between Reuben town’s and William Lemuel Spear’s and to extend northward by Benjamin Woods’ to the north part of the settlement in West 13, 3rd range.

 

  1.  The road district to begin at the creek and near Webb Harwood’s to extend northward by John Kingman’s to the north line of west 12, 2nd range.

 

William Jonathan Edwards, Sr.  We the subscribers wish you to record the above division of highways in the town book, according as the law directs.  Done in Tollond, this 6th day of June, 1796.  As witness our hands.

                              May 14, 1796

 

At a spetial(sic) town meeting held at the schoolhouse near William John Russel’s, by notification of the Town Clerk at 2 o’clock p.m. on the 14th day of May, 1796.  John Swift, Esq., Inspector of the Meeting.

 

The meeting being duly opened adjourned to the house of Doctor(?) S. Aldridge to meet immediately.  The meeting being opened accordingly proceeded to business.  Voted that this town will choose commissioners to take care of their school money.

 

Voted – That this town will choose five Commissioners.

 

            Chosen:  John Hurlbut – School Commissioner

            For 1796 Thomas Goldsmith – School Commissioner

                             Noah Porter – School Commissioner

                             Jared Comstock – School Commissioner

                             Humphrey Sherman – School Commissioner

 

Voted – That this town will vender the marks of cattle to the highest bidder.

 

Voted -  That the owner of any swine that such damage shall be liable to make the damage good without any regard to fence.

 

The meeting adjourned without Day.
