Projects taking place at Palmyra, New York's fine
museums. |
Some of the projects
we're working on (in-progress and completed):
Numerous projects are being undertaken to
clean up, enhance, repair, and improve Palmyra's fine, historical museums. If
you see any projects here that you would like to work on, or if you just would
like to help out, contact us. We
can always use extra hands.
- The Visitor's Information Center is now
operational during normal Museum hours. Housed in the Historic Palmyra Museum
at 132 Market St., you can find pamphlets and brochures on places and things to
do in the greater Palmyra area. Thanks to Lynne Green for her assistance in
this project. (Completed) Posted 7/19/00.
- Also in the Historic Palmyra Museum is
the new space for the Research and Resource Center. The room has been cleaned
and readied for painting, which should occur over the next few weeks. Once
complete, this room will be available for anyone who would like to sit and
conduct research. (In-progress) Posted 7/19/00.
- The Annex of the Phelps Store is being
prepared to house the Print Museum. The Museum has collected several old,
workable printing presses and type. The plan is to eventually use the presses
to educate and use as an interactive exhibit. (In-progress) Posted
7/19/00.
- A new porch has been added to the
Historic Palmyra Museum and a ramp is being prepared for handicapped access.
The ramp is an Eagle Project for Boy Scout, Bob Devlin. (In-progress) Posted

- A brick walk is being planned to the
ramp and porch at the Historic Palmyra Museum. This, too, is an Eagle Project.
(In-progress) Posted 7/19/00.
- The Scrapbook Project is in the works
and consists of placing scrapbook pages in sleeves, then making two sets of
photocopies of each scrapbook. The scrapbooks will then be rebound and stored.
By creating photocopies, select scrapbooks will be available for reading and
researching without damaging the originals. At this time, what is known as the
"Lincoln" or "Civil War" scrapbook has been photocopied. This particular
scrapbook consists of 97 pages of newspaper articles and pictures written in
the 1930s that have to do with Lincoln and/or the Civil War. Of particular
interest is information on Andersonville.
Another scrapbook to be
rebound is one of O.J. Garlock's photographs, taken during the 1890s through
about 1903. The photographs include pictures of Palmyra and areas around New
York State. (In-progress) Posted 7/19/00.
- The Historic Palmyra Museum was recently
painted. (Completed) Posted 7/19/00.
- The Tenant House is having some repairs
made to its exterior, bids are out for painting the exterior, and the roof is
soon to be replaced. (In-progress) Posted 7/19/00.
- The Phelps Store has been undergoing
repairs and a drainage project is nearly complete. (In-progress) Posted
7/19/00.
- Gardens around the museums are being
expanded and plans for a Victorian Garden are in the works. (In-progress)
Posted 7/19/00.
- The Military Room in the Historic
Palmyra Museum is being made into two rooms. One room will house items from the
Revolutionary War to the Civil war and the second room will consist of items
from the War of 1898, the Spanish-American War, to the present. This action
will replace one of the Women's Rooms. (In-progress) Posted 7/19/00.
- A room for East Palmyra is also being
planned for the Museum. (In-progress) Posted 7/19/00.
